How StudySMART Is Supporting First-Year Students to Succeed
2 April 2026
StudySMART got under way in Week 2 of semester and in just 5 weeks has delivered 57 sessions, reaching 193 first-year tauira. In these sessions students are supported by trained student leaders to learn university study skills and review essential content through collaborative activities. Sessions are open to all first-year students in the following courses: BIOS110, BMGT116, COMM112, LWST114, PHSC101.
In addition to peer-led study sessions, this semester we are also running an active lecture in SOCI116 with StudySMART Leaders facilitating activities planned by the lecturer. Incorporating collaborative activities within the lecture allows students time to process concepts, learn from others’ perspectives and check understanding. StudySMART Leaders encourage participation and a sense of safety by clarifying understanding and facilitate discussions and activities. So far, feedback is very positive. Watch this space!
If you are in one of the courses listed above and have not yet joined a StudySMART session, it is not too late! Sessions begin again after semester break and run through to Week 12.
